Principal's Message

Welcome to Our Learning Community
At Chimacum Creek Primary School, we believe that childhood is a time of wonder, exploration, and natural curiosity. Our educational approach honors the way young children learn best—through meaningful play, connection to their local environment, and experiences that match their developmental needs—while building the strong foundational academic skills essential for lifelong learning success.

Learning Through Play and Discovery
Play is the foundation of all learning
in our classrooms, providing the ideal context for developing essential academic skills. When children engage in purposeful play, they naturally practice reading, writing, mathematics, and scientific thinking in meaningful ways. Our teachers carefully design play-based learning experiences where students might write grocery lists in our dramatic play store to develop literacy skills, use manipulatives and games to master addition and subtraction concepts, or conduct experiments with water and sand to understand scientific principles. You'll see students building with blocks to explore geometry and spatial reasoning, creating stories that strengthen narrative writing skills, and engaging in collaborative problem-solving that develops both mathematical thinking and communication abilities.

Connecting Learning to Our Special Place
Place-based learning connects our students to the rich community and natural environment
while providing authentic contexts for practicing foundational academic skills. We believe that when children learn about their local watershed, explore the forests and fields nearby, and connect with community members, they develop stronger reading comprehension, writing skills, and mathematical understanding. Our students navigate our garden and nature pod to develop a sense of place right here along Chimacum Creek.

Developmentally appropriate practice means we meet each child where they are academically and provide the right level of challenge to accelerate their growth. Our teachers understand that building strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics requires instruction that matches each child's developmental stage and learning style. We provide systematic phonics instruction through engaging, hands-on activities, offer multiple pathways for children to demonstrate their mathematical thinking, and support writing development through authentic purposes and audiences. You'll see differentiated instruction that challenges advanced learners while providing additional support for those who need it, ensuring every child develops confidence and competence in essential academic areas.

Rigorous Learning Through Joyful Experiences
Our approach ensures that foundational academic skills are developed through engaging, research-based practices.
Children master sight words through interactive games, develop fluency through repeated reading of favorite books, and strengthen mathematical reasoning through real-world problem-solving. We integrate science and social studies content with literacy instruction, so children are reading about topics that fascinate them while building comprehension skills. Our assessment practices help us track each child's progress in reading levels, mathematical concepts, and writing development, ensuring no child falls behind in these critical areas.

Your Partnership Matters
We invite you to be active partners in your child's academic journey. We'll share specific strategies you can use at home to support reading development, mathematical thinking, and writing skills. Join us for literacy nights, math family events, and opportunities to see how we integrate academic learning with play and place-based experiences. When families and schools work together with a shared understanding of how children develop strong academic foundations, every child can thrive.

Together, we're nurturing confident, curious, and caring learners who are mastering essential academic skills while staying deeply connected to their community and ready for whatever comes next in their educational journey.

In Partnership,
